Manual Trans Oil

I was wondering if anyone knew what type of oil a 1983 240D stick shift trans takes. Does Mercedes have a particular type of oil that they want used like their coolant? Or can I just use any type of higher quality manual trans oil?

Mfr. recommends ATF, automatic transmission fluid Mine began to grind occasionally going into 2nd gear. I replaced the ATF with synthetic gear oil, SAE 80/90 and molybdemum paste, that corrected the problem, mostly. Dont be shy.

I've had great luck with synthetic Red Line MTL (Manual Transmission Lubricant). It's been in 2 years and really helped balky 2nd gear synchro. Shifts like butter. It was specifically designed for tranmissions originally calling for ATF. Read their spec sheet @ www.redlineoil.com; very informative. I'm in no way connected to the company. Not cheap lube but easy to find online. 80/90 gear oil contains reactive sulfur that can shorten synchro life by 50%. Also viscosity way high. Read spec. sheet for more gear oil negatives.
