My 1983 300td has an inoperable tach. It periodically will jump around wildly when the engine is run for an extended period at high rpms. Is this consistent with the wire or the amp being faulty? Is there some good way to determine which is faulty wihtout just randomly replacing both? thanks
Tach
On mine under the hood the screw in amp needed adjustment.I unscrewed the amp.Popped the cover off carefully, and put two water hose washers.Put cover on and screwed it back on but not tight. This way when washers get flat, you can screw more so that pins are going deeper into the socket. Now another guy, pushed the pins up on the socket part.Strange looking back at owneres records when new, they never fixed his tach right. They change amps.I guess dealer mechanics in 1983 were not that smart.
