Upgrading Alternator Amps for DTC

Submitted by Chris Konik on 19 May 2008 - 7:14am.
Greetings from Columbus, Ohio. My 1982 Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel has a glorious Mercedessource DTC system! Only problem I am experiencing is that the alternator can not reliably keep up with the electrical demands. What ampere level would be a good upgrade (150 amp to 300 amp?) and do you have any specific brand/model of alternator you recommend? Trying to eliminate the risk of producing too many amperes as well (if that is even a concern). Many thanks and keep on Greasing! --- Chris Konik

Ebay. Some guys switch alts. off a Saab.Ebay has some alts. I wonder too,why can't I take a alt off a w126 v8 powered car, change pulleys and go with the higher amps.Or will the battery overload, could go with higher amp battery.

Chris, I have a 1981 300SD with Mercedessource 2 Tank WVO system. I love the unit! I found in the snow with the headlights, defrost, booster pump, trunk heater, wipers and radio on, I ran out of juice! My research found the stock alternator was rated at 85 amps. My friendly part store got a 95 amp alt. for me. I wasn't sure it could handle my needs, but have not experienced any shortage in the electoral department. Jim Hodges

Jim: That makes sense. I was on the line of thinking that 100amps would be a maximum rating and still be adequate for the increased load. As you come across any issues and need another opinion, feel free to email me directly at chriskonik@mindspring.com so I can return the favor. Grease On! --- Chris

Response to oldsinner the Alternator will work the same on any car the only problem you would have is with your wiring within your car can it handle it. The Alternator has one job to do is to crank out the current if your pulley size about the same size it should work like the old one except have more current available. The voltage it develops should be the same with it being determined by the regulator internal or external. Richard F. Medford, Or.
