83 300d climate control probs

Submitted by frosty on 11 June 2008 - 10:00pm.
I own an 83 300d. I have replaced the blower motor and the acc unit after having the #8 blown fuse problem. Now instead of blowing the fuse it gets blistering hot, after pulling the fuse the #8 slot has melted. Any advice or fixes would be greatly appreciated as I am roasting alive every day.

# 8 Blown Fuse

I have the same problem. I just purchased the car (83 300d td)and the previous owner told me it worked fine as long as you did not use the high button (speed 6).I guess you have the auto climate control. It has 6 speeds the bottom button is 1 the auto will go from 2-5 and the top button is 6. I am still trouble shooting this problem, but I have replaced the fuse with a 25 amp circuit breaker and I am not using high speed. It seems to work fine. The #8 fuse supplies 3 things: 1) The blower motor 10 gauge wire. 2) The AC clutch 18 gauge wire. 3) The blower motor control circuit 18 gauge wire. I checked the AC clutch and it takes 3 amps to pull in the clutch. I am not sure if that is to much or not. The blower motor a @ 14 volts will pull 15 - 20 amps. I think this is the problem. The blower controller in speed 6 is only supposed to supply 11 volts to the motor and it will only pull 18 amps. I think the problem is in the blower motor resistor mounted on the passenger side inner fender under the hood. I plan to add a resistor to my current supply wire to keep the motor from seeing anything over 11V. If it works I will take a photo and let you know what size resistor I used.
