83 300D, no engine shocks?

Last night I decided I was going to change my badly worn motor mounts. I thought it to be a good idea to read the instructions before attempting the repair. In your instructions, Kent, you say to remove the engine shocks. I didn't think I had ever seen these engine shocks on my car so I looked again. I can see where some SHOULD bolt into place, but they are nonexistent. So, my question is do I need them? I'm guessing that is why my fist set of engine mounts went bad, and why my engine shakes violently. Any help would be appreciated! Chris

Shocks are recommended

Hi Chris, My guess is that someone removed them the last time the mounts were changed because the shocks were shot. They do help to soften (but not remove) engine shake and will prolong engine mount life. Your engine shake could be due to a number of issues:

  • valves out of adjustment
  • camshaft lobe(s) excessively worn
  • poor engine compression on one or more cylinders
  • fuel injectors not sprayiing properly or pressure balanced correctly
  • injection pump delievery valves worn out
  • rack damper bolt worn out or not adjusted properly
As far as your missing shocks - if there is nothing there - you may need shocks, top rubber mounting plates, lower rubbers and washers, and mounting bolts and nuts. When you buy new shocks they do not come with all the extras. I might have some good used with hardware. Email sales@mercedessource.com if you need help finding parts.
