You are looking at the worlds first production diesel mechanical fuel injector bench tester available in the U.S. for under $200. These are built at the Mercedessource shop to control quality and production demands. This bench mount pop tester will allow you to economically test the spray pattern and fine tune (balance) your fuel injectors at home. With the injector fitting included it will work on all Mercedes diesels from the early 1960s up to 1993. This includes chassis 110, 115, 116, 123, 126, 201 and 124 and models 200D 220D 240D 300D 300CD 300TD 190D 300SD 300SDL 350SD.
Glow plugs do not last forever. I have found they generally need to be replaced about every 2 years for peak performance. If your diesel starts hard when cold, or starts but runs rough for 30 to 60 seconds before smoothing out, or the glow dash light flashes right after startup, then it may be time to replace the glow plugs. They should be replaced in sets unless you have the odd failure of just one fairly new plug.

Running badly means poor performance. It happens sooner or later to EVERY diesel owner. The word "performance" is often used to describe how well a diesel engine runs once started. The principles discussed will cover all Mercedes diesels from the mid 1950s to the mid 1990s. Throughout this manual I will use this word to discuss a number of common problems. How performance is rated can mean different things to different people. In the following pages I will relate diesel performance to the following four criteria:

• What kind of fuel economy does it deliver?
• How smooth does the engine run?

From the improvements (sometimes dramatic) I have seen first hand and heard second hand (from our customers, I can confidently say this is the No.1 performance upgrade for an older Mercedes diesel. Increasing fuel pressure can increase both power and MPG. One of the common reasons for a diesel to produce excess smoke and deliver poor fuel economy is low fuel pressure/flow to the injection pump. This can of course be caused by dirty fuel filters but it can also be caused by a worn mechanical lift pump as well as worn components inside the injection pump itself. When fuel pressure is low it can actually delay the release timing of your fuel injectors - thus causing incomplete fuel burn - leading to excess smoke and poor mileage.
