How Can I Tell if My Automatic Transmission Needs Replacing?

The following are key signs your transmission may be in trouble. 

  1. Burnt smelling transmission fluid (dark in color)
  2. Fine metallic particles in the bottom of the oil pan
  3. Delay in shifting out of park. More than 1 second to engage in reverse or drive
  4. Won't shift into higher gears or does so reluctantly
  5. Transmission jerks or slips between shifts

This is the new factory genuine transmission vacuum modulator valve with adjustment key and cap. Failure of this part can lead to harsh or jerking shifts and in some cases prevent the transmission from shifting into 4th gear. AND once they reach a certain age they can not just be simply cleaned to restore peak performance. Dont neglect this service as many do! I recommend the hydraulic fluid and filter be changed every 30,000 miles. You would not believe how many SLS vehicles I have seen with dirty hydraulic fluid - I mean nasty!  Sometimes I have even found engine oil in the system!  Let me tell you, the system does not respond very well with dirty or high viscosity oil.  ALWAYS use the proper hydraulic fluid made specific for Mercedes Benz SLS suspensions.  If in doubt about what is currently in your reservoir, flush your system and install new fluid and filter.  An empty SLS will require approximately 3.5 liters of fluid to fill it.  You will need 4 liters to thoroughly flush out the old fluid.

I have never been impressed with the rubber vacuum hose found on older Mercedes diesels. I don't think the engineers ever anticipated how much abuse or how long these hoses would need to last! Over the years I have seen way too many vacuum related problems lead back to a failed hose connector or short hose length. The combination of high heat generated in the engine compartment as well as both internal and external engine oil contamination are the chief causes of its early demise.

Glow plugs do not last forever. I have found they generally need to be replaced about every 2 years for peak performance. If your diesel starts hard when cold, or starts but runs rough for 30 to 60 seconds before smoothing out, or the glow dash light flashes right after startup, then it may be time to replace the glow plugs. They should be replaced in sets unless you have the odd failure of just one fairly new plug.

Here are the correct size metric nuts with built in shoulder washer. If you drop these in behind the injection pump you may never find them. When doing glow plug service it is always a good idea to have some spare nuts on hand. New Bosch glow plugs do not come with new nuts. Why Wont My Mercedes Engine Crank Over??

These diagnostic instructions apply to both gas and diesel engines. If your engine will not crank over when you turn the key or does so intermittently then check the following in the order listed. Remember to always start with the simple and inexpensive first and then move on to the more complex/expensive. You can not believe how many times people have had their starter motors replaced only to discover it was a bad switch or poor electrical connection!

I know they are special and kind of expensive but I have not had good success finding a generic replacement. This o-ring has to be tough enough to handle the high heat at the injection pump. If you see oil leaks around the area of the rack damper (located on bottom at rear of injection pump) then replace this o-ring. Also recommend when replacing the rack damper with the upgraded bolt. E6000 CLEAR General Purpose Trim and Rubber Adhesive

Need to glue rubber seals, dash wood, side trim, bumper rubber, etc - this is the best!

Over the years I have used many different products to try to adhere chrome and trim pieces to body and interior panels. None has performed better for me than E6000. Silicone glue can't compete. When dry it holds like nothing else. It never dries totally hard so you can always cut it with a sharp razor knife to remove the part in the future. Great for adhering bumper trim and rubber, side mouldings, and interior wood and trim. It does take overnight to dry, so you will need to something strong to hold it in place while drying. Note: For bumper rubber I have even driven the car up against a wall to hold the rubber in place while it dries overnight! I don't know about you, but I just can not stand loose trim.
