Our June 15, 2010 our new company mascot arrived. It is a well cared for 1966 230 with 6 cylinder gas engine and automatic transmission. To read the full story on how we acquired this unique vehicle CLICK HERE. This is an excellent example of the type of old Mercedes that is well worth saving and restoring. Refurbishing may be a better word to use in this case since the car does not need a full restoration!  I have found that if the car is over 30 years old - no matter how well it has been taken care of - it will usually end up needing certain parts replaced to make it a safe and reliable daily driver. In this case the angels plan to drive this car to deliver packages. In the coming weeks I will share with you a list of repairs we will perform on this new baby.

After much prodding by his two sons (who just happen to be in the filming business), Kent has deciding to fully commit to producing a series of technical videos on troubleshooting and repairing older videos. Each will be approximately 3 to 8 minutes in length. His goal will be to take some of the mystery out of solving common mechanical problems that most owners face.

Mercedes Rust Repair for the 6.9 - Lets Make it Permanent

Follow along as I take you through the products and procedures I will use to repair the rust on my 6.9. I have been working on rusty old cars since I bought my first Model A Ford when I was 13 years old. I have tried every product imaginable. Very few live up to their claims to make it go away and not come back. Even welding in new metal is not a guarantee that the rust will not come back. You should see some of the dozens of examples where I have seen the weld seams rust from the inside out because they were not properly coated and protected from moisture on the blind side! And NOTHING rusts faster than an oxidized weld seem. I have come to believe that unless you are restoring a valuable collector car, one should stay away from sheet metal weld replacement.

I had decided a year ago that my days of restoring old cars were probably over. I don't seem to have the energy I once had and with all that is going on in the this business every day, I hardly have time to do oil changes on my numerous daily drivers. But no matter how hard I try, I just can't seem to rid myself of the desire to rescue another special Mercedes. And so it has happened again. Look what I trailered home on November 22. It is a 1978 450SEL 6.9 (European model) with classic Euro bumpers, headlights, and velour interior. This baby has 289 horsepower (39 more than the U.S. version). Absolutely no restrictive smog controls. Came from the factory with heated front and rear seats, power reclining rear seat, ABS brakes, and hydroneumatic suspension.

This is absolutely the very best product you can use to cover the miracle rust repairs in your fender wells and under your car. I have tried them all and have found nothing better.
