How to determine if this conversion will work in your Benz

WHY CONVERT?

3/8/24 - Now tool supplied to remove optical trigger plug

We are offering this kit with a new correct coil matched with the correct new ballast resistor that must be installed for the unit to perform properly and not overheat. We have found that most of the old coils and/or original ballast resistors on these old Mercedes are either mismatched or worn out. The only way we can guarantee this conversion will work on your old 4-cylinder is to include these two critical parts. The kit includes the following:

  • Fast XR-700 conversion kit
  •  4-cylinder correct shutter
  • Correct Ohm balast resistor
  • New matched resistance coil
  • Component mounting hardware
  • Extra wire and terminals to complete wiring
  • Lengths of black wire loom to cover new wiring
  • Factory-written instruction manual
  • Kent's 30-minute video instructions

PLEASE NOTE: The video instructions were filmed converting a 6-cylinder 280SL engine so some scenes and locations are different. But installation and wiring principles are all the same ( 4 or 6 cylinder).

Be sure to read the written instructions that pertain to Mercedes and follow their wiring diagram:

PLEASE NOTE:  How to perform final ignition timing with a light is not included in Kent's video instructions. This is a standard tune-up procedure and information on this is readily available online or from various service manuals.

This picture shows how the rotor disk is installed and optical trigger being positioned.

SPECIAL NOTICE FOR ENGINES WITH FACTORY TRANSISTORIZED IGNITION: From 1970 to 1973 many 6 cylinder engines had factory transistorized ignition. This was an attempt to improve the ignition performance and reliability of the contact points. If you are not sure if your engine has this look for the two plastic "black boxes" as shown in the picture below. They will be mounted on the left side of the engine compartment towards the front grill. Some may be "hidden" under the radiator core support. ( Shown here is a 1970 280SL ).

You can eliminate this sometimes troublesome system by installing our electronic ignition. You will need to bypass the factory modules when wiring in the FAST XR 700 ignition module.  Kent's video instructions will explain how to do this in detail.

Many people have written to ask if this kit will fit their particular car. That is something you will need to determine YOURSELF by removing your distributor cap and rotor and measuring your points camshaft (flat spot to flat spot) with a caliper as shown (width should be approx. 15.7mm). If you can get the rotor to fit on the cam as shown below the kit WILL WORK on your engine.  Notice the measurement is taken on the flat sides of the cam (not on the tips/edges). Watch the video above for more detail on how it fits.

MAKE SURE THE REST OF YOUR IGNITION SYSTEM IS IN GOOD HEALTH! We highly recommend you install new spark plugs when doing this conversion. We have found that the Bosch Supers ( nickel ) work extremely well with this system. ( See related products below). Replace your distributor cap and wires if they have not been replaced in the last 10 years.
