280sl 1969 engine stops when getting hot

Hi, i have a 1969 280 sl that has been garaged the last 10 years and now i try to put it back on the street. i have good fire and the car starts really good when cold then runs for about 1 minute then stops. When you turn the ignition key on again it starts for 1 second then stops. The only way i can get it to go again for more then 1 second is the next morning.Does anyone knows how to solve this problem. really i need help thanks Jonathan

280SL fuel system

Hi Jonathan,Â If your SLÂ has sat for a long time without running, Â you most likely have a fuel delivery problem due to old fuel and varnish buildup inside the fuel system. You could have a bad fuel pump, plugged filters, or a gummed up fuel injection pump.Â I recommend you do the following:

First check to make sure your fuel pump is running.Â When you turn on the key you should here it humming at the back (left side above rear axle).Â If you hold your hand on it you can feel it running.Â If not then you must fix this first. If it is running proceed with the following:

Remove fuel tank screen at bottom of tank, drain fuel, inspect inside of tank and clean screen or replace.
Replace fuel filter element in engine compartment
Check fuel flow to injection pump by loosening hose fitting and turning on fuel pump.
Attempt to start engine

If it will not continue to run then your problem is most likely in the fuel injection pump. YOu may have to remove it and send it out for overhaul.
