Clutch interchange

I have recently replaced the motor in my 80 240d with an 83 motor. The clutch on the new(er) motor was in such nice shape I did not replace it. Is the throw-out bearing from my 80 incompatable? Things grind a little when the pedal reaches the floor. Suggestions?

Hi Larry, to better advise you let me know how far down the pedal goes before it starts to engauge the clutch. 1/2 inch? 1 inch? 2 inches? For the 240D you have vin splits (two different parts) on the clutch master cylinder, the clutch slave cylinder and the throwout bearing. You either still have air in the system or you have a mismatch on one or more of those parts.

Thank you, Kent. About a 1/2" or 3/4" freeplay, the clutch engagements/disengages about a 3/4 to an inch beyond that. The pedal feels "light" engagement is smooth, clutch doesn't slip. there is a slight noise (throw-out bearing?) with the clutch out in neutral. Do I need to rebleed the hyd.? Am I getting air back in the line from some where? I bled the heck out of it after I swapped motors. I feel, through the pedal, as much, if not more than hear the pulse at the bottom of travel. I think all my mounts are good, I handled them all. Thoughts?

Bleed again

I would try bleeding the clutch again. Did you bleed from the bottom up? I have had some clutches almost refuse to let all the air out. On some I have had to pressure bleed from the slave cylinder up and then pump bleed down as a final measure. There have been one or two that I have had to drive for a day or so and then bring it back in to get those last few bubbles out. Let me know how that goes.
