300SD warm/hot start problem

MY 126 starts great when the engine's cold, but has trouble starting when the engine's warm/hot. I have to crank the engine for 5-7 seconds, then stop and wait. Repeat. Repeat again. Finally, it will get started (With lots of smoke out the back). Any ideas why this is happening?

In order to help you diagnose this problem, I will need a little more information. Did your engine start doing this all of a sudden, or did it happen gradually over a period of time. Have you already done all your mechanical checks like valve adjustment, engine timing and compression test? Have you inspected / tested your fuel injections? Have you tested glow plug relay function with the engine hot?

Share with use the things you have already tried and the parts you have replaced. That will help narrow it down.

I'll be working on it today. (In other unrelated repairs, I'll be replacing the thermostat and the short hose today.) I've been reading your articles "Why doesn't my diesel shut off" and "Why won't my diesel start". I forgot to mention that it takes up to 30 seconds for my car to completely shut down. I'm going to take a look at all my vacuum lines and the shutoff valve. If the shutoff valve is shot, per your article, it can also affect starting. I'll do a bunch more work on it and will report my findings. -tj

found the problem!

read through your "why is my diesel not shutting off" and determined it's the shut-off valve. shut the car off, disconnected the vacuum line running to the shut-off valve, and the car started right up. UNREAL! this problem has been driving me bonkers. that little .pdf file is worth evey penny i spent on it. now that I know what the problem is, since i've going to have to do some pretty heavy duty vacuum system overhaul work, do you seel a complete kit of all the hoses and fittings i need to do the job? tom
