76 300D neutral safty switch replacement

I believe I have the simptions of a faulty neutral safty switch. How difficult is it to replace on a 1976 300D 115 chassis?

An easy replacement on 1981 300D

If your '76 is similar to my '81, the switch is located on the driver's side of the transmission. It is aluminum colored with the shift linkage attached to it. A black electrical plug is attached to it as well (for the starter lock-out and backup lights). There are only two bolts holding it to the transmission housing. An easy test for the neutral safety switch is to shift it into neutral and see if it starts (this jiggles the switch and might reestablish the electrical connection). If it starts, there is a good chance the switch is going bad or just needs adjustment. You also might want to test your starter and the ignition switch--these starting problems can be tricky.
