Accelator pedal and diesel RPM corelation question

I just got hold of an 84 300SD with 87,000 miles on it. I haven't started any of my initial maintainance yet (filters, hoses, compression test etc). There were no maintance records with the car so I will be replacing a lot of the "minor" stuff. It starts great on only one crank and shuts down perfectly as well. Not having owned one before I don't know if what I am seing is normal or not. When you press down on the accelarator there does not seem to be a direct response from the engine(rpms). It does climb up there though. It does not take a lot of time but I do not know if this is normal or not. There also seems to be a small amount of travel in the acceleration pedal where there is no change in engine RPM. Comments and suggestions would be helpful.
