removing front suspension spring on a 1985 300TD

One of the steps to remove a front suspension spring is to disconnect the sway bar. I'm very wary of doing this. Is it under tension like a torsion bar or will it just disconnect? If it is under tension, how can I reinstall it? Alaskan Benz
