Front end shakes and rattles

I have a 1983, 300SD. At speeds around 60 to 70 mph I get vibration that fells like it is coming from the right front wheel and I also feel it thruogh the gas pedal. Also when making a right banking turn, (as in going from one freeway to another freeway), the front end will shake violently. This also feels like it is at the right front wheel. Can you give me any help as to what to look at and what to look for?

I've been through several front end shake proplems. There's 2 ways your front wheels can shake: up and down and sided to side (turn left/right very fast). The up/down is wheel balance and happens at around 60 mph. Left/right happens at diferent speeds depending on problem but causes tire wear that makes the problem worst. If you let it go too long, you'll need new tires as well as the loose tie rod, idler arm, ball joint or steering dampner that caused it. Have someone steer while you look out the window at your tires while its happening (shaking). If the wheel is going up and down (fast) then get your wheels balanced. If the wheel is turning left/right, jack the car up by its control arms (to keep weight on suspension) and wiggle all the arms and links to find loose ones. Always replace the steering damper (its cheap). If you're lucky, you will only need a tie rod. Most of the parts you can replace yourself (tie rods and idler arm bushings) but I would have a pro do the ball joints. Then you will need an alignment. If its your right wheel going left/right then odds are you need the right tie rod and idler arm bushings. Set the length of the new tie rod equal to the old one (before install) to get you to a shop for alignment. There's a trick to avoid removing the exhaust to replace the idler arm bushings and you don't need all the spescial tools listed in the manual.
