So the other day I was out driving and started hearing a loud clicking noise whenever my '83 240D was in gear. I assumed it was the brakes since the rear brakes need to be done, but when I got out of the car and took a look I noticed that the rear right wheel was angled away from the body of the car. I jacked the right side up to get a better look at the suspension, but I know more about engines than I do suspensions and I really was just looking for something obvious that was broken. I couldn't tell if anything was out of place as compared to the other side, so I set it back down and the wheel sort of righted itself straight again since it had been jacked up. I had to drive it back home 30 some odd miles, and I could tell it was being sluggish and it ate fuel a bit more than usual, but it got me back.
One more thing that might be helpful to know: a few months ago I noticed that the rear left tire was riding higher in the wheel well, so I took it to a mechanic, who said that the car was still level and thought it was just a weak shock absorber, and wasn't interested in replacing it since he was backed up. Then the right side started riding at the same height as the left, and when I push down I can tell it has some extra bounce which leads me to believe that both rear shock aborbers are shot.
I'm just hoping someone will have some idea of what's wrong, just so I'm not going completely blind taking it to a mechanic.
