Windshield wipers wipe uncontrollably....driving me crazy!

I bought a 1984 190D 2.2 last week. The windshield wipers operate without me touching the switch. Seems to be completely random. What could it be? Anyone seen this problem before? Thanks a lot from this new Mercedes driver.
