'80 240d neutral saftey switch location

I think my neutral saftey switch may be going bad, as the starter is having trouble engaging at times. Can you tell me where it is located and is there a way to test it? Thanks. DJ

If it is like my 300CDT then it is on the left side of the transmission (drivers side) as far as testing it, I don't know as it also controls the reverse lights so you would have to use a 12v tester then determine which pin is for reverse and which is for the ignition. to take the plug off there is a plastic ring that has to be turned counter clockwise I believe, but it has been awhile since i pulled it off so I'm not sure.

suddenly- I turn the key to start and all I get is a single click. Is it the trans safety switch, starter or ? I got a jump from a tow truck last night and got started but I cannot get it going now...

Sounds like the starter or the starter solenoid, but if it started with a jump, perhaps it is a bad connection. Try cleaning all the connections. I'd start at the battery and work from there. Also there is a grounding strap that goes from the engine to the body, it is a braided flat cable that is on the drivers side of the engine where the transmission is attached. This is often overlooked and should be cleaned.
