1986 560 SEL Burl Wood Ttrim

The burl wood trim on the dash and doors of my "86 560 SEL needs help, but I have not found a source to help with repair or replacement except the dealer which runs over $3500. Any ides's? john

do you have to have burl?

I have an 86 300sdl with the zambrano wood and it is (or was) past it's prime. If you aren't in love with the burl or a benz purist hears what worked for me. I took out a few pieces at a time sanded them (220,400,800) don't go to far and watch the edges it's only veneer or take to a good wood working shop and have them strip it. They might be able to C&C all new pieces from a wood you pick out (zebra wood or purple heart would look good my opinion)it would cost way less than $3500. After sanding now you could stain it and clear coat it. Stain of your choice clear from a can works good. I had paint "laying around" and wanted custom look so I sprayed black spray paint (yes black) light coats until I got the desired grain to stain (paint) combo let dry then took duplicolor "spray effects" (I think it's called) that has metal flecks in it a few light coats until you could see it nice in the sun but not too glittery clear coat from a spray can and it looks great. I did the B-pillars the backs of the seats (too much palomino in the car for me) ashtrays in the back and the cubby thing under the front ash tray. A time investment can get good looking parts so dive in and make it your car! (instead of someone elses old car).
