'76 300D will not reverse

Submitted by tnhand1022 on 19 June 2008 - 9:56am.
Automatic transmission. When I drop it into reverse the engine just revs as if it were in neutral. Park and drive are just fine, drove it 50 miles to home after the security guard pushed me out of the parking space. I've got two different mechanics saying I need a new transmission, but a guest staying at my inn says it might just need a reverse pin adjustment. Can anyone explain what this is to me? Or has anyone else out there had this problem? Thanks! Nicole

Do not replace the transmission!

I believe hundreds and possibly thousands of these earlier transmissions have been replaced when all they needed was a reverse band adjustment. Information on how to do this will be included in my forthcoming Mercedes Transmission Troubleshooting and Adjustment manaul. It will not be out for a while yet, but if you place an order of $50 or more on our website I will include that section of the manual free of charge. Be sure to mention this special offer in the comments section of your order when you check out or it may not get included.

Thanks!

I had a few things in my shopping cart anyway, and that was all the impetus I needed to place my order. Thank you so much for the suggestion - I look forward to receiving the tranny manual and sorting it out. Now I can stop having panic attacks about that $4500 overhaul quote...
