No,never gas or diesel add a turbo. The engine has to be built for one.To many young kids destroy perfect engines trying to run races.Enjoy the mileage and alternate fuels if you wish.Blow chicken smoke in their faces.
I was curious if someone had a turbo 5 cylinder in a a parts car and had a non turbo 5 cylinder car, how terrible would it be to swap in the turbo motor? Is there a significant difference in the chassis wiring etc on the turbo cars?
Bryan, I have done this conversion a couple times. I only recommend you do it if you have a complete 123 turbo parts car. You need the transmission, drive line, exhaust, radiator, oil cooler and preferably the rear end. Main issues will be throttle linkage, glow plug wiring and relay, and possible heater/ climate control issues. Usually not worth the trouble unless the car is extremely nice. Kent
Thank you for your replies. I think I should have been more clear with my question. At the local U-Pull It places I see 123 cars with 617 turbo diesel engines. Could I keep my engine and add the turbo and manifolds and injector pump? Are there that many differences between the two? Brian
What about if I have a complete 123 series turbo(300td) and a 115 series body (220d) that has a tired motor, but great body. Are the motor mounts etc all different? I would love to have the older body style with the power and efficiency of the newer motor!
I replaced the engine including the exhaust from 78 sd to my 78cd. Worked great for a couple of years and parked it when I bought a 87 sdl.It is still here and I probably could answer some of your questions
I read previous posts and want to make sure I got it. To swap out engine in my 1978 300SD (blown head gasket) with 300 turbo d engine I would need to replace the transmission, drive line, exhaust, radiator, oil cooler and the rear end.
If so, any other ideas?
Happy Holidays Kaia! We hope you all had a Merry Christmas and have a Great New Year. Here are some photos of the wagon and Me and Mikey out front of our house in Hawaii.
