1984 300D Cruise control issues

Submitted by usmc7117 on 10 January 2010 - 6:37pm.

Hi all. Hope the New year is being good to everybody. I work this site for all I can and have read every question that pertains to my particular car and have gained so much knowledge. I am grateful to Mercedessource for providing this great data base. That said my question is, that if I set my CC at about 62 mph and around 3000 rpm it works fairly consistant. I say "fairly consistant" as eventually it gets a little jerky. If I don't set it right around those values it runs even more jerky. It surges and then backs off again and again as it tries to compensate for rises and dips in the highway. I have read about the amplifier under the dash and loose ball sockets in the linkages. Has anyone had similar symptons and addressed this specific quirk and what was your experience and outcome.
Thanks for any input.

want to cruise too

I have a 86 300SDL and have a similar issue. Is your C.C. lever a little limp (insert joke here) on my car I can set the cruise sometimes and it will speed-up ( not toyota style) but then back off maintain ect. It will catch at a certain speed but not always. I know we have differant cars but the lever is the same and I know there is something "wrong with my "limp" lever it doesn't have that click or feel of engagement (well because it doesn't engage) C.C boster box too?? under your right foot and too the right I belive. This may up date the post and provoke a real answer to this conundrum we have.

cruisin too

Noah, you described the symptoms I have to a tee. The only thing different is my lever is not limp. It seems to engage okay but then it just doesn't maintain consistently. Kent said sloppy ball and sockets on the linkages, and the amplifier are key, but I was just wondering if there was anything else. I think my sockets are good but they are relatively cheap so maybe I will change them and see what happens. He said that amplifer was $$$$$$. Thanks for replying.

Better with use

Took the car for a bit of a trip this weekend and used the cruise all the time on the highway. After putting up with the jerky inconsistant operation for some time, eventually it seemed to get better. On the way home it improved even more. Is this possible that exercising this feature could be a cure. I really like to drive my car so I don't use the CC much but the work out seemed to do it good. Kent have you or anyone else ever heard of this?

cruise control jerky 300D

mike:
i did a ton of research on this issue a while back as i was having the same prob. what i discovered through various forums is that this is a known issue with MB cc's of this era. there is probably nothing wrong. i have heard if you drive on rough roads or your speedo needle is anything but rock steady, the cc will be herky-jerky. some have found relief by a liberal application of graphite to the ends of the speedo cable. my solution is simply not to use cc unless i am on smooth roads.

UPDATE: i just got back in from checking my linkage between the top of the valve cover and the cruise actuator and it was sloppy...as in lots of play. i popped the linkage off at the cruise actuator side and the linkage was about 4mm too long. i adjusted/shortened the linkage so there was no play at all with the actuator arm in the full off/home position and now my problem is totally gone!!! i took "marvin" on about a 10mi test drive and cannot believe the difference.

Gonna try that

Hi JMcQueen. Read your post today. The part about the "rough roads" really caught my attention. I thought it was my imagination that when I hit bumps the cruise control would hiccup, so to speak, and the car would run jerky. Now after hearing from you I know this is for real. I am going to follow your lead and check the linkage going to the actuator, re-adjust if needed, and see if I can alleviate some of the inconsistancy. Thank you so much for your input as I thought all the feedback had been reaped from my question which has been on the forum for almost 2 months. Oh yeah, I like your cars name, Marvin. Yes I am gonna use your magic on "Old Yella". Thanks again.
