73 280 s transmission problem

can anyone explain why my 73 280 s has an rpm flare or hesitation going into 2nd gear? it only seems to do it at mid range acceleration. if i baby it into gear, it slides in fine, or if i gun it. it goes into gear, albeit a little less smoothly than perfect. it also has quite a kick going into reverse. is this a bad problem, or hopefully, something less serious? thanks.

May be getting tired?

It is always hard to diagnose transmission problems via email, but from my experience the symptoms you are describing may indicate your transmission is wearing out internally. If the transmission fluid smells burnt or you find metal and fiber particles in the pan - that is a good indication to start looking for a replacement. You can always change your fluid and filter if not done so already and even consider putting some transmission additive in the soften up the rubber seals and clean out the passages.

I would look for a good used transmission. Quality rebuilt may prove cost prohibitive. I have even written a manual on how to remove and replace it yourself. CLICK HERE to read more.

73 280 transmission won't shift

Hi. after commuting apprx. 64 mi. 6 days a week in my 73 280 during which time she ran great shifted a litle hard but ok for a 73 then I parked her for apprx 10 days..now the tranny won't shift out of 1st, also immediately preceeding this I had the radiator completely rebuilt(contributing factor?), in addition the car sat for the 2 years prior to 08/09 due to an electrical problem nevertheless I went ahead and changed the filter during which the pan revealed straight fluid no metal shavings, p.s. in the period before the electrical problem the transmisson was only flushed and filled with dexmerc and lucas and the tech said the old fluid did smell a bit burnt. thank you

Suspect valve body

I suspect you have corrosion or sticking valves in the valve body. To see if it is related to the radiator could pull pan and look for evidence of engine coolant in the bottom. I would recommend you start looking for a good used transmission replacement. Don't throw money at a transmission that has sat for long periods of time.
