Hello, I purchased a '59 220S that had the wrong engine and trans in it (mid-70's model). I found an engine with Type Plate M180.III 180.924Z and rebuilt it. I believe the transmission that I used was out of a 190SL, I don't have the number with me. The engine very quickly revs to high RPMs and seems as though the gearing is incorrect. For example, the car seems most comfortable if I am in third gear by 25 mph. I was told that all Ponton transmissions are essentially interchangeable with minor gearing differences, but now I am wondering if I have a problem with this marriage. Thoughts and advice?
Additional information - I just found that the "Z" reference on the engine plate refers to a Hydrak model. As I recall, the older German mechanic who helped with the rebuild said the engine was from a Hydrak model. When we first installed the engine we had a bad vibration. The mechanic said it would go away in time (i.e., harmonic balancer would settle). The vibration did not go away, the engine came back apart and the crank shaft was balanced with flywheel attached - nearly 1/2 pound out of balance, mostly to one side. I am wondering if the rev issue is related to the Hydrak conversion (i.e., wrong flywheel for 4 speed manual??).
Many thanks,
Jerry
