116 Heater blower fan replacement

Hi I have a 116 - 1974 280S in which the heater blower fan stopped working quite some time ago. It blew out a lot of smoke one day and hasn't worked since. I heard that removing the fan is a MAJOR job that involves removing both front seats, dashboard etc. Is this correct? Many thanks for any info, Danik Sygrove

116 heater blower location

Hi Danik, If you had a 114 or 115 chassis that would be true, but someone fed you the wrong info. The 116 chassis motor is located on the right side under the glove box area. Access is by removing the right side underdash panel. Should take you about 10 to 15 minutes to remove the unit. I have good used 116 heater blower motor assemblies if you want to go that route.

Hi Kent Thanks very much for your reply, much appreciated and the info sounds promising. One thing I should have mentioned is that my car is right-hand drive. Do you happen to know if this means the blower motor would be under the glovebox (on the left) or if it would likely still be on the right? Many thanks, Danik

Right hand drive?

I have seen a number of right hand drive Mercedes but not a 116 chassis. Don't know what the factory did on this one. Start out by taking off the underdash panel opposite your steering wheel and let me know what you find.
