1980 300SD, 116.120, 617.950, 101k miles. Rod knock?

From a stop light as engine speed reachs 2000 RPM a taping or knocking can be heard. The sound remains thru 2400 RPM at which time it either quits or I cannot here it for road noise. With a stethoscope, I have determined the knock is loudest in the #5 cyl area. If it is a rod, I would have expected the knock to be louder at the oil pan but, it is about the same as at the valve cover. In the shop, the knock cannot be heard until the engine gets up to temp. Starting at about 1950 RPM the knock is present until about 2500 RPM. Valves have been checked and are ok. Oil pressure is normal. Runs strong. Flex plate bolts are tight. Pressed the accelerator and quickly released but did not here the knock. What else should I do to try and identify the source of the knock? Appreciate your experience/knowledge. Nate Buchanan
