shift bushing replacement advice

This is not a question, but rather an additional tip.

I've installed MercedesSource's shift bushing kit on my 1980 300SD, a W116 chassis. The instructions were very good, though I had trouble getting the clips back onto the shifter rod between the two levers. With the shifter rod out of the car and held in my hand, I was amazed at how easy the clips install on each end, but nearly impossible when the shifter rod is inserted into both of its bushings under the car. I thought I'd share how I solved this problem.

By the time you get to re-installing the clips, you're at the last step, having replaced the bushings and inserted the shifter rod into them. When you try to re-install the clips, you're pushing on the rod end to get the clip in the groove. When you do that, the rod slips backward, and the groove isn't exposed anymore, but rather hidden in the bushing. You can't get the clip to clip because your're pushing in a direction that removes the rod! I found that inserting a scrap piece of wood, jammed up against the shifter rod, will hold the rod solidly against either bushing. This allows you to apply pressure in the opposite direction to install the clips without pushing the rod-end groove into the body of the bushing. Bergsma warns about the clips giving you "fits" in the instructions, and he's right! Have a piece of scrap wood handy, and you'll get the clips back in without cursing.
