240D speedometer howl

I have a 1981 240D with a speedometer that has recently begun to howl loudly. The speedometer works fine for awhile and then makes a clicking noise and begins to howl. It continues to indicate speed while howling. When I slow down almost to a complete stop, it seems to reset itself and the howling goes away for awhile. I'm thinking maybe the end of the shaft is worn and slightly rounded? Anyone run into this? I think my speedometer is ok since I just had it rebuilt a few months ago. Thanks, Andy

Happened to me morning of April 1 a year ago, was sure it was a co-worker messing with me. Turned out to be lack of lubrication in the speedo. Took the instrument cluster out and removed the speedo. Carefully took apart on a old dishtowel spread out on the kitchen table.(some leetle screws here) The bearing for a little magnetic spinner was the culprit. Use a very light oil, Starretts instrument oil is great. Apply judiciously, work back and forth. The "siren" in your dash should go away. While you have it apart check the odometer gears. If the gease is still soft just make sure there still is some on the ends of the shafts.
