1984 300sd engine keeps running.

My 1984 300sd will keep running after the key is out of the ignition. I do have a new shutoff valve to replace, but have not gotten to it.

Well, I figured out why the engine cuts off some times before I get the hood up. When I'm getting out of the vehicle I tapped the brake and it killed the engine. I do this with regularity now. Has anybody heard of this? And if so, is it still my "shutoff valve" or a vacuuum booster to the brakes?

2/8/09 Update: I ran thru Ken's vacuum diagnostic guide and found that my shutoff valve is working functionally. Brakes work fine, door locks work good, transmission shifts properly enough. There is a "Y" connect off the main black line in the fuse box area(firewall/infront of the brake oil rez.)
Plugged the RED and GREEN striped hose and sure enough the engine quit immediately.

Now can anyone tell me, is this "Climate Control" and what difficulty level are we talking for repair? I do have the drivers' side underpanel out and do see a green plastic line, am I cold or hot?

Thanks again, Rafe.
