1982 300 cd Starting Issues

Greetings,

I am having cold starting issues that are getting worse and worse. Over the past few weeks the care has had to crank longer to start. When it does it tends to shudder a bit and also smokes some. Once it smooths out, it runs like a top, though it continues to smoke a bit. The car has an STC and its WVO fuel, while dark, is clear and clean and from known sources. Power, ride quality, acceleration and other performance qualities are terrific. When hot it cranks up immediately and will start without the glowplug cycle. It has recently gotten new glowplugs and relay, new injector nozzles, a valve adjustment and a diesel purge. None of these have effected any change w/ starting, but car is running better altogether. I'm obviously hoping that it's not poor compression, but this seems like a fairly rapid descent given that this a reasonably new development altogether. I'm not sure when the issues started, but the car started cold immediately until fairly recently.

So I'm wondering if my starter might be an issue and if these are signs of a failing one. I guess I'm also wondering if my fuel might not be good enough or if there's anything else to look for (the fuel filters all have been cleaned and replaced as well).

Thanks, George
