1984 300D cruise control not consistant

Hi all and Happy New Year. I have read a few questions about cruise control problems and always try to learn from them. The problem with my Benz is a little different from what I am reading. My CC works but is not consistant. Sometimes when I set it right around 60 mph and around 3000 rpm it holds pretty smooth and constant. But unless I set it at just the right speed it operates kind of jerky. It will surge for a second and then back off as it compensates for hills and dips on the highway. It just isn't constant. On one hand I attributed this to 25 year old technology but then again I say Mercedes wouldn't settle for that. I think Kent mentioned somewhere that worn ball and sockets on the linkage rods could cause this but is there anything else I should check. Thanks for anything anyone can offer.
