85 300TD fuel sending unit removal

My fuel gauge does not work. It used to read about 1/4, but now doesn't read at all. I read a post here about cleaning the sending unit, but cannot find it. Is there a diagram available of the wiring for the unit? What do I have to remove to get to it on an 85 300TD with a rear seat?

You will have to remove the moulded gray carpet panel that is the foot well when the seat is set up. No instructions available - just start removing and any panels and fasteners that hold it in place. You will have to get the wiring diagram from the factory manuals on CD if you can not find a used paper manual.

Thanks. When I ordered a new unit, the tube was a tad too long. After ruining that one, I was able to get a used one. I had to pound out the bottom of the tank to make it fit. Once I got the threads to start, I was able to tighten it. It works now, but is this a problem for the later models?

all tanks are the same

It is really only a problem when the bottom of the fuel tank has been hit
