85 300TD A/C belt keeps coming loose.

I'm having an issue with my A/C compressor belt on my 85 300td. It keeps coming loose.

When I bought the car 2 months ago, the belt was missing completely and I was not sure if the A/C worked or not. I installed a new conti belt. The a/c works perfectly except after 200 miles or so the belt comes loose. Yesterday I checked the belt and now it looks slightly chewed up on one side.

I'm not sure if the problem is A/C pulley or something else.

gd- Funny, I just logged on to search for ac belt replacement stuff. My situation is quite similar. Just purchasing our 300TD, no ac belt is on it when we purchased it.

From what I have read, there are adjustment bolts on the rear of the compressor. I believe I read they are plastic, but I may be mistaken. You must loosen the mounting bolts for the compressor and then make adjustments to the compressor. Tighten adjustment bolts, then mounting bolts. 13mm for everything I've read.

I am about to dive elbows deep into this as well. Going to try just putting on a new belt and see if the ac works. Guy I bought it from says he believes the ac system was retrofitted and has a GM compressor.(?) I guess I will find out soon enough. Report back and let me know what you find, I will do the same.

Hi John,

There are 3 bolts that you have to loosen, and 1 adjustment bolt (no plastic on mine). I must have done this about three times and it still comes loose. Not sure what's going on.

Someone told me it might be because I'm missing one of my engine mount shocks ????
