The car has 250,000 miles, and from the receipts from the previous owner, you can tell he really cared about it. When the transmission catastrophically failed, he reluctantly decided to sell it. I don't think I've seen any car with 250,000 miles on it that is in as good condition cosmetically as this 300E. There's not much that needs to be done to it cosmetically. Probably the two most noticeable things are a couple of cracks in the dash and a break underneath the front bumper.

The main work to be done is mostly mechanical and can be handled by a serious DIY enthusiast. Here is a list of items that the next owner will need to address. The transmission and driveline have been completely rebuilt ( 2025 )
ENGINE: The engine starts and runs OK with no abnormal noises, but it has the classic signs of the documented M103 worn valve guides and valve guide seals. These include excessive oil consumption, blue smoke at extended idle, and oil-fouled spark plugs. Given the engine's mileage, it would be best to remove the cylinder head and replace the valve guides and valve guide seals.
EXHAUST SYSTEM: The exhaust system has numerous small holes in it and will need to be replaced aft of the catalytic converters.
REAR END: The differential howls at various speeds, shows signs of excessive wear, and makes clunky noises when the transmission engages, indicating excessive internal play. Your best option here would be to find a lower mileage rare end from another 300 E and just replace it, based on my experience. I believe that's a better option than having it rebuilt.

Note: No warning lights other than the low windshield washer fluid light. That should be an easy DIY fix... :-)
