Here is another diesel item I strongly believe should be replaced as a preventative measure. Water pumps do not last forever and when they go, it is usually when you are on a trip - right? I feel they should be changed every 100,000 miles.

Fits 115 and 123 chassis 220D and 240D to 1983. Check yours for staining around the gasket. Also check nuts for tightness. These symptoms may indicate a leak. This is an important maintenance item! I have seen bad leaks as well as completely loose intake and exhaust manifolds.

Fits only 123 240D models from 1977 to 1983. If your heater valve is leaking or your are not getting the heat you should this valve may be bad. Easy to replace as it is located on the center of your firewall for quick access. SM6

Fits 123 chassis non turbo models only. This includes 240D, 300D, 300CD to 1981 and 300TD to 1980. These air cleaner housing rubber mounts break and can cause your air filter housing to rattle on the engine. Grab a hold of your housing and see if you can lift it up.

In a perfect world your diesel would not leak a drop of fluid. Unfortunately, with the age of your vehicle, it may not be economically possible to eliminate every leak. You may just have to live with some leaks.

Replacing your oil cooler lines / hoses is a very important maintenance item on your older Mercedes diesel. Getting them on and off though is a different matter!
