I have a 76 300D that I am having a strange problem with. Usually the car will start without any problem two or three times, and then it will appear that the battery is too weak to even make the car turn over, although the headlights and other electronics still seem to be at full power. I have had the alternater tested and it seems to be working fine. I took the battery back to Wal-Mart and their machine (as well as AutoZones) found the battery to be good. Even after their machine said the battery was fully charged the car would not turn over, so I replaced the negative battery cable and scraped away the corrosion, still to no avail. I began to assume a starter problem, but decided to charge the battery overnight once more (since that had worked previously) and when I put it back in the car it started without problem!!!
What could the malfunction be. I have parked ther car and disconnected the positive cable to see if it holds a charge. Maybe I should have disconnected the negative instead? Also, sometimes it seems like the transmission will not shift into fourth gear even at highway speeds. What might be the cause? Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks,
MMarullo
