'81 300TD Manual sunroof latch-handle ends up in my hand!

I was closing up the manual sunroof on me old'81 300TD wagon and as I was twisting it to latch, the handle snapped off into my hand. Roof is closed but not raised at the back edge. Hmmm... anybody had this happen and had it fixed or better yet fixed it themselves? Not sure where to start- all advice welcomed on this! And thanks in advance! Diesel Don. I love the motor, not the sunroof!

This happens more often than you might think. Due to lack of sunroof maintenance and lubrication. Puts too much strain on the handle. Try to pick up a used handle and locking mechanism from another wagon sunroof.

Broken manual sunroof latch-handle Solved!

Now that I have replaced the sunroof mechanism and broken handle, I will describe for anyone else who may have this come up-- get another used sunroof with a working mechanism and handle- I bought one here from Mercedes Source. First, remove the wind deflector- it just pops up and out. Push the sun roof open 6" or so.
Removing the sun roof Headliner is the next step- not that difficult- just pull or gently pry downward on the leading edge. There are six or seven clips that will pop out of the sunroof holes. Next, slide the headliner forward and out while pushing rearward on the sun roof. This may take some finnessing, but will slide right out. This exposes the handle and mechanism which is held in place by 7 small bolts, and 1 bolt on either side that actuate the tail end of the sunroof to close. Simply replace with newer mechanism and handle (after you lube it really well). Re-assymble by inserting the headliner the same way it came out- snap leading edge back in place, re-attach the handle mount with the single screw and you are done. About an hour project. No special tools needed.
