'84 190d, sitting for at least one year

Hey all,

Previous owner of a 300cd, sold it about a year ago and recently got the itch to buy another and I purchased yesterday a 1984 190d with 186k on the clock. The body is dent and rust free but the paint heavily blistered. The interior needs a major cleaning and a few parts replacing.

Now the engine, which is why I'm writing today; the owner said he parked it about a year ago due to "injector pump timing issues". (Knowing this, I went ahead and took a chance, purchasing the car for $260 considering transmission overhaul about 20k ago and R134a upgrade about 25k ago.)

My question for you is, where do I begin? My thought was to drain and replace fluids (oil, coolant, brake fluid, fuel), charge/replace battery, pull injectors, squirt oil into cylinders, turn her over a few times by hand then see if she'll fire up ... if not, at this point I can take her to a mechanic and/or buy some diagnostic guides and get my hands dirty.

Thoughts? Is there something obvious I should be doing during this preparation phase? I thought Kent had a book/kit at one time, something like "starting life with your new diesel" but I can't seem to find it.

Thanks for your help,
Carl
