1984 300D STARTING PROBLEM

Hi,

Sometimes my diesel engine will not crank. I recently put in a new ground strap, starter, alternator, and battery in the last year. All appear to help for a while and then it happens again. Is this common?

Hi Smarra. I know this is probably the obvious and possibly unrelated what so ever, but what about the neutral safety switch? Is the gear shift selector in park or neutral when you attempt to start? Just a shot.

yes, definately in neutral

yes, definately in neutral and sometimes it will just suddenlt start after several attempts.

How to check

When you find it won't start hold the key all the way over to the start position with your left hand while wiggling the shifter with your right hand (both in neutral and park positions). If it suddenly starts turning over, then replace the neutral safely switch on the left side of the transmission. If it is not the neutral safety switch, I would replace the electrical ignition switch on the back side of ignition lock assembly. We have a special installation kit for that part.
