My 1987 300D is failing to start. I just installed new set of glowplugs and (reamed out the carbon). I checked for voltages at the appropriate terminals of preglow relay/timer in accordance with the MB factory manual and all seemed in order. The preglow light on dash illuminates for only 2 or 3 seconds. And the start attempt then fails. I then swapped out the preglow relay from my other 124-----now the preglow light stayed on for 8-10 seconds and the engine started fine. I thought it was now fixed so I reinstalled the intake manifold. Now it again will not start and the preglow is only on for 2 seconds. My problem is intermittent but each failure to start is associated with a rapid clicking that seems to be coming from the small aluminum box that is immediately aft of the injection fuel pump. Thx for any help offered.
