82 300TD high operating temperature

kent

1982 turbo diesel wagon. great runner. no mechanical or fuel issues. always ran about 180 or so degrees. just barely above the 175 f mark on the gauge.

recently...maybe over a month or two. it is rising to near
200. (the next hashmark on the guage) or sligly above with in stop and go. and then drops to about about 185-190 at 60 mph. my usual cruising speed.

outside temps around 95 (though outside temp doesnt really have much of an effect...samre readings day or night)

drained the radiator. and it was clean. backflushed with
clean water. washed the bugs out of radiator fins...
and new thermostat. new coolant. no change.

is there anyway to check the fan clutch. it has the same or more friction than a couple of other turbo diesels i checked...im thinking at low speeds it is suffering due to bad fan clutch. or does the friction "feel" with engine stopped have anything to do with fan clutch operation.

i have a used fan clutch to swap out. came off a running car. may do tht to test

can water pumps go south and just be less efficient.
or do they just fail all together at once.

it is not over heating. really not much above the 200 degree mark. i am just concerned that is could continue to get worse during the 100 plus days we have in south texas.

finally...there is an occasional flicker of the guage. it will jump from around 190 down to 180..or 175.
i have cleaned the connection to the sending unit..and it
does not flicker if you jiggle it....do the temp sending units ever go bad. and cause it to read a little hotter thank it is actually running?

thanks for all your help.
