Is the broken chain still in place? Can you get hold of both ends? Dream solution possibly would be to fasten new chain to one end of the broken chain. Take the other end and manually turn the engine over until you bring up the new chain. Fasten the new chain ends together and VOILA! Done. Are you talking about the timing chain? Well, I hope this is some help...and more importantly that you get it fixed ASAP with minimum difficulty!

'83 300TD Oil pump drive chain..

Oil pump drive chain broke and ended up in the oil pan. Not enough room to install the new one without removing the upper pan. Can upper pan be removed without pulling the engine?? Thanks, Don

Yes the oil pan can be removed w/o removing the engine. Do you have a "cherry picker" otherwise known as engine hoist? You can loosen the bolts holding the engine in the motor mounts and lift the engine up about 6 inches...enough to remove the oil pan or at least drop it and get the chain out. If you need more space, you can disconnect the motor shock absorbers at one end so you don't over stretch them. A cherry picker (engine hoist) cost me $200 new and I've used it and re-used it for NUMEROUS projects not related to removing or lifting an engine in the car. I have invested in tools and books instead of paying repair bills. MercedesSource is an invaluable source and full of wonderful people!! Good luck friend,Don!
