Diesel Fuel Lubricity

I just bought my first Mercedes a week ago. I have seen and heard quite a bit of discussion about the diesel fuel lubricity of the new low sulphur fuels. Naturally, opinions I have found seem to range from "Hey, it's no big deal", to predictions of doom within the next 12.5 minutes, none of which site any decent sources for their information. The standards of fuel production specify lubricity, but there seems to be some scepticism about how closely the refiners and distributors are adhering to those standards, and for that matter, whether the standards meet the needs of diesel engines. What is the informed opinion? Are additives necessary? If so, what additives offer the best performance at a reasonable cost?

Your question is a little like asking someone what the best motor oil is... :-). Some will tell you to just add some transmission fluid. Or how about a quart of used cooking oil. Then there is always Marvel Mystery Oil. All these will provide lubrication which is better than no lubrication at all. It is the fuel injectors themselves that will suffer the most over a long period of time. But the best additives also contain chemicals that improve combustion, reduce tank contamination, improve fuel economy and clean the system at the same time. I prefer Lubro Moly Diesel Hi Test. If you can find a biodiesel

If you can find a biodiesel maker in you area, private or whatever, 5% added to your pump fuel (even kerosene), will add the lube you need. It will blend better than veg oil, and no glycerin to leave residue.
