1980 300D "passing" gear and faint whistle when turning right

If I push on the accelerator with only modest pressure (especially when the car is cold), it often jumps into what I assume is a "passing" gear. I've dealt with the problem by just being cautious with the accelarator - often, I just let up on the gas when I hear it jump into "passing" mode, but I was wondering if there's a repair I can try.

Also, I've begun noticing a faint whistle from the front end of the car when I vear right (mostly on the highway, after moving at highspeeds for more than a couple of hours). It's most noticeable when I turn the sterring wheel slightly to the right, like if I'm switching lanes. Any idea what it could be?
