1975 300D Eventual Loss of Power

I have an approximate 45 minute commute to work. At about 30 minutes into the commute I detect a little surging at highway speeds. This has occured over the past few days. Temperatures are in the low 40s. Yesterday, I experienced severe loss of power limiting my highway speeds to 35 MPH. At lunch time drove to dealer with no problem (15 minute ride) with no loss of power (90 MPH). Dealer ordered a fuel filter. On my way home I experienced severe loss of power (worse than the morning commute)to the point of having to stay off the highway. I experienced numerous engine failures at traffic lights and hills. If I pull over and shut the engine off for a few minutes, problem goes away for 5 - 10 minutes. If I don't drive for hours, problem goes away for 30 minutes. I'm thinking the fuel tank screen is clogged.

Your thoughts and opinion would be appreciated, thanks.
