Best tire size for 14' rim on 300td

I have come across many who have various sizes of tires on there 300td 14 inch wheels.
Which size would you recommended?

Will the same size tires fit

Will the same size tires fit on my 84 300dt sedan with the stock alloy 14" rims?

I actually have a set of rims with the stock tire size (snow tires), and one with 205 70 14. With the slightly bigger tires, the RPM is lowered a bit while cruising on my '83 300TD. I had an 85 300TD until recently, with the lower rear end ratio, and I don't think the bigger tires make quite as much difference as that, but they do help. As far as I could tell, there was no difference in handling, and the minimal size difference doesn't make much of an appearance change either. Seeing I've got completely different types of tires in each size, I can't compare noise, ride quality, etc. My '85 300TD had the SLS replaced with gas shocks, so the ride and handling were pretty messed up, and not a good comparison either.

My speedo happens to be right only with the bigger size. My wife almost got a ticket after I put the bigger tires on, because she was used to adding about 5 mph to the speedo reading...

In summary, I'd say if you have a pre-1985 rear end, get the bigger size unless the speedometer issues are a problem for you.
