Where the hood hinge goes through the body.....

of my 300TD, the hole has been elongated to the point that the clip pops off the hinge arm when I open the hood. Right now, I have the hinge arm through the hole with a big washer and then the clip. The washer keeps things in place enough to keep the clip on and it works. Certainly not a long term fix. Has anyone dreamed up a solid fix for this one? I thought about JB Welding the washer into place, and then I thought again....Any suggestions, sarcastic or otherwise, are welcome. Thanks!

Hood hinge repair 123

This is quite common and it is due to plugged water drains, rust and lack of lubrication on the hood hinge points. This is another good reason I warn about keeping the 123 drains clear and hood hinges lubed. See more info under my maintenance alerts and tips.

I have repaired this a number of times and best repair comes from cutting a good body hinge hole sheet metal section (as much as you can) out of another 123 parts car - then cutting your damaged section out - after properly marking exact hole location - then cutting, aligning and welding in the new piece. Not an easy job but trying to fix it any other way may lead is undesireable results. Welding in a washer may work but will give you sloppy / and or binding hood hinge movement. Kent Bergsma
