Diesel transmission life?

I'm considering purchasing an early 80's 300D. Can anyone tell me what the expected life of the tranny should be if it's been maintained properly and driven decently? Also, what would a tranny overhaul cost? thanks for your help in advance!

Not all transmissions are created equal

It would depend on year and model and of course how to the car is driven and maintained. Average life is in the 200,000 to 250,000 mile range but I have see neglected (and some bad year models) not last 150,000. You can become proficient at replacing automatic Mercedes transmission if you buy older high miles cars or mechanics specials. Some chassis engine combos are easier or more difficult then others to change out. I am curious about Kent's book?
