Mercedes V8 Start-up Noise

- I have a 1982 380 SEC [double chain] that has a 'rattle like' noise on COLD start-up. This noise lasts for about 30 seconds until the Idle Control kicks in reducing the revs then everything is normal. I've changed the Tensioner and don't understand why/if the Idle Control has anything to do with pressure/ oil pump/ing Any solutions or ideas ? -

Chain or lifters?

This type of noise is most commonly associated with a loose or stretched timing chain or hydraulic valve lifters that have leaked down overnight. It takes an experienced ear to tell the difference. The chain will have more of a rattling noise that goes away fairly quickly (2 to 4 seconds). A loose lifter will have a tickiing noise that may make noise for 5 seconds or more.
